About Pushkar Ghat

Pushkar Ghat is a stepped bathing ghat on the east bank of the Godavari in Rajamahendravaram. It lies beside the city ends of the old Havelock Bridge and the Godavari Arch Bridge. Pilgrims come to bathe from the steps, and small shrines stand along the ghat. The crowds are biggest during the Godavari Pushkaralu, held once every 12 years. The next one is due from 26 June to 7 July 2027.

After sundown, priests stand on platforms over the water for the Godavari Nitya Harathi. They raise lamps of many forms to the river while mantras are chanted. A local trust began a full-moon harathi here in 2010. It became a daily ritual during the 2015 Godavari Maha Pushkaralu. Trains crossing the Arch Bridge add to the scene. The ghat and the Havelock Bridge are being redeveloped under the Akhanda Godavari project, whose foundation stone was laid in June 2025, so expect some building work.

Highlights

  1. Godavari Nitya Harathi after sundown, led by priests on platforms over the water
  2. Views of the Havelock, Arch and road-cum-rail bridges across the river
  3. A holy dip from the ghat steps into the Godavari
  4. Small riverside shrines along the ghat
  5. Trains rumbling over the Godavari Arch Bridge beside the ghat

Good to know

  • Come before sunset to get a place on the steps. The harathi starts after dusk, so ask at the ghat for the day’s time.
  • Bathe only where it is allowed and follow police instructions, especially when the river runs high in the monsoon.
  • Dress modestly and leave your footwear before going near the shrines and the water’s edge.
